Genuinely, one of the measures that’s stopped book banning the most when districts implement it, is having the would-be banners fill out a form that demonstrates if they’ve read the book or not. Like where they have the summarize the plot and characters and do a mini book report and give a review. It stops them in their tracks. This is why in my high school, every time someone wanted to ban a book it ended up going nowhere. There was one where a conservative student wanted to ban the manga “Legal Drug” for having a marijuana leaf on the cover, then got the form that required them to actually read and either balked, or read it and realized it was not pro-drug at all.
(The other one that reduces book bans even further is “requiring the would-be banner to be affiliated with this actual school in some way, either by being a student, faculty/staff or a parent of a child at the school” because the vast majority of bans are “activists” with no affiliation with the school who just travel around trying to do this in districts all over the U.S. IIRC a few years ago someone crunched the numbers and just 51 parents were responsible for all the book bans that year nationally. 51! In a country with 50 states, with over 300 million people total!)
I know the tumblr users don’t like rap music discourse was months ago but I just remembered, the craziest part of the fact that the userbase on here seems to be allergic to rap is that it used to be the exact opposite. Back in like 2010-2014 there were a bunch of rappers active on here and tumblr was seen as a legitimate way to build an audience for up and coming rappers. Odd Future was on here, A$AP was on here. There were rappers that were considered “tumblrcore”. Cloud Rap was a trendy sound for a few years and people attributed its popularity in part to tumblr. Like not only did tumblr users used to listen to rap, they were fucking tastemakers for a little while (for better or for worse). The current state of things only really happened post dashcon when the site started bleeding users and the only people left on here were hardcore fandom posters who for some reason all listen to the same five Mother Mother adjacent bands. The hipsters took the fucking rap music in the divorce.
I’ll be real I think it has less to do with dashcon than it has to do with the purging of Black users from this site especially in 2014 after Ferguson when staff claimed a a bunch of bloggers who were posting about BlackLivesMatter were actually Russian bots to excuse deleting them alongside white dominated fandoms harassing so many Black people off this site. There’s always been overlap of different fandoms on this site and some white people were certainly running hip hop blogs pre 2014 but white fans have never been what sustains hip hop fandom in any space. Let’s be real the white flower crown wearing fangirls posting about superwholock were not the ones who made OddFuture or Chance or any of that tumblrcore era hip hop popular.
